Standard 2: Skill and Fitness Based Competence

Physical education teacher candidates are physically educated individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to demonstrate competent movement performance and health enhancing fitness delineated in the NASPE K-12 Standards.

In PED 182: Health Related Fitness, Jack was required to develop a cardiovascular and flexibility fitness plan as well as a muscular strength and endurance fitness plan in order to improve these aspects of his performance. Before developing these fitness plans, Jack participated in a number of fitness tests to see his current abilities and used these to develop the fitness plans in order to improve himself. This addresses NASPE Standard 2 as Jack can use skill performance and determine a measureable goal to attain.

At the 2009 New York State AHPERD Conference, Jack presented alongside fellow physical education majors in the 'Spice Up Your Warm Up!' workshop. Jack presented two activities that set simple locomotor skills to music that was developmentally appropriate to the targeted age group. This addresses NASPE Standard 2 as Jack strives to learn new ways to develop and improve basic movement skills.
